Registering to Vote

Eligibility Requirements

  • A United States Citizen.
  • A resident of New Mexico (and specifically Roosevelt County for Portales).
  • 18 years of age or older by the time of the next election.
  • Not have been denied the right to vote by a court of law due to reason of mental incapacity.
  • (You can register and vote even if you are on probation or parole, but not if you are currently incarcerated for a felony offense).

The quickest way if you have a New Mexico-issued Driver's License or State ID.


Visit the New Mexico Secretary of State's online voter registration portal: https://portal.sos.state.nm.us/ovr/webpages/instructionsstep1.aspx


You'll need your New Mexico driver's license or state ID number, your Social Security number, and your date of birth.

In Person

You can register in person at the Roosevelt County Clerk's Office in Portales.

The County Clerk's office is generally open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST.


You can also register at any Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office or some public assistance offices.

By Mail

You can print a voter registration form online (such as the National Mail Voter Registration Form) and mail it to the Roosevelt County Clerk's Office.


If you are registering for the first time by mail, you will need to include a copy of a current and valid photo identification or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, student identification card, or other government document that shows your name and address. If you don't include this, you'll need to show ID when you vote.

Important Deadlines

Online and By Mail: 

Generally, 28 days before Election Day. Your mailed application must be postmarked by this deadline.


In Person / Same-Day Voter Registration: 

New Mexico offers same-day voter registration. This means you can register to vote and cast your ballot on the same day at your County Clerk's office or any polling location in your county on Election Day, and often at participating Early Voting locations. You will need to bring acceptable identification.

Changing Your Registration

If you move, change your name, or want to change your political party affiliation, you must fill out a new voter registration form and submit it to the County Clerk's Office or the New Mexico Secretary of State's Office.

The Portales Memorial Building, located at 200 East 7th Street.

While I don't have a specific event listed for November 4th, 2025 at the Memorial Building right now, events for that far in advance are often not yet publicized.

The official city website (https://portalesnm.gov/) often has a calendar of events, especially for city-related meetings and public gatherings at the Memorial Building.

Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce

Their website (https://www.portales.com/events/) is a great resource for community events.

Local News Outlets

The Portales News-Tribune or The Roosevelt Review often publish event listings.

You can try calling the City of Portales directly for information on scheduled events at the Memorial Building.  You can reach them at 575-356-6662.
